Task 4: Who else is out there- how good are they?

- Who am I competing against?
- What do they offer?
- What makes me better?
- What makes me different?

Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of three practitioners or graphic design agencies as objectively as you can. What opportunities for your own practice have revealed themselves to you as a result of this analysis and evaluation... It is essential you make references to SWOT and evaluate it's usefulness as an analysis or evaluation tool.

Kiosk

Other companies may provide a better service in single design disciplines.

Lack of motion graphics

Specialised Market

Opportunites
Expand company across more disciplines

Threats

Companies that can offer this service to a broader client list.
Possibly lower funding for smaller clients therefore have to charge less
Sheffield isn't as big as Leeds and London of design

Could get involved with bigger companies

T

INHOUSE

S-
Environmental beliefs
Big client brands
Multi-disipline
Based in London & Melbourne (expanded) clients in other countries
Doesn't have a style, the design is based on what the brand brings
Highly conceptual based, about getting the right idea!
Big budgets to work with

W
Working with well known big brands mean they have limitations on how creative they can be

O
Further expand company to other countries
To work on big budgets

T
threats to the economy, brands would find it harder to generate funds for big design costs

What makes me better/ different?
I am definately not better than any of these services as I lack the experience of working within a company for x amount of years. I guess what makes me different is my ideas and the way a go about designing, possibly having new ideas because I am still in education and absorbing all the skills I can and the fact that I'm on such a good course that gives me an insight into all aspects of graphic design therefore I have at least a basic understanding in all areas not just print like some companies. I think my strengths lay in the conceptual side of designing and similar to Kiosk my client list would be quite focused, mine on the fashion/ retail industry. Not many of these companies look into creative packaging and interiors ideas, this is something I could bring into the business.

Pentagram. London, New York, Austin and Berlin

Political Factors-
They work for a large list of clients in all areas of design from retail to government, publishing to health, covering all aspects which bring their own political factors with each project and could possibly conflict with other projects. They have to make sure the clients they work with and projects that they do meet regulations and rule of law but this would be different for each client. As they work over four countries, their will be different political factors applying to each project that needs to be addressed.

Economic Factors-
Largest Independent Design consultancy

Social Factors-
The attraction to the company is that they are a team of 17 partners that are specialist designers and highest in their creative field, the appeal of this is a client can approach the company with any project and they can work independently to solve the design problem, bringing in aspects of all areas of design

Technological Factors-
The team here are made up of specialist designers that have the relevant skills in each area and are aware and upto date with current and future technologies.
